Diathermy Therapy

What is diathermy?

Diathermy is an effective cosmetic treatment used to treat skin problems such as moles, warts, skin tags, spider veins, dilated and broken capillaries, red spots, white spots, and milia. Diathermy gives blemish free smooth skin, instantaneously. It is a bloodless procedure and does not require any stitches. It is used primarily for cosmetic treatment of the face, neck, shoulder, chest and back. These are the areas of the body which get exposed to the harmful effects of the sun and the environment and more often develop skin problems.

How is diathermy performed?

Diathermy involves the use of high energy current to produce intense heat which destroys the lesion. The area to be treated is made numb by applying local anaesthetic and then a fine hair-thin needle is introduced in the lesion to pass the current. The heat produced destroys the tissue of the lesion and the lesion disappears instantaneously. After the treatment mild swelling and redness may result which will resolve in few hours. The superficial sore is left open and allowed to heal on its own and forms a scab. A mild antiseptic cream may be given to apply till the sore heals.

When should I avoid diathermy?

Diathermy treatment gives consistent good results for superficial skin problems but cannot be used if you are pregnant or suffering from heart disease, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, blood disorders or have a sensitive skin.

What precautions should I take following diathermy therapy?

After the diathermy treatment you should not apply makeup on the treated area and should also protect it from direct exposure to the sun for few days. Smoking delays the healing process of the body so avoid smoking for few days.
