Upper Eyelid Ptosis Correction

What is ptosis correction?

Ptosis refers to drooping of the upper eyelid. In some cases, it can interfere with vision or affect the symmetry of the eyes. Ptosis correction is a surgical procedure that aims to lift the upper eyelid by tightening or supporting the muscles that control eyelid movement.

How is ptosis correction performed?

Ptosis correction is usually performed as a day procedure under local anaesthetic. A small incision may be made in the crease of the eyelid to allow access to the levator muscle, which lifts the eyelid. The muscle may be shortened or tightened to improve eyelid position.

In some cases, excess eyelid skin is also removed during the procedure (blepharoplasty).

If the eyelid muscles are very weak, another approach called frontalis sling (or brow suspension) may be used. In this procedure, a strip of tissue (sometimes taken from another part of the body, such as near the knee) or a synthetic material is used to connect the eyelid to the forehead muscles, allowing the forehead muscles to assist in lifting the eyelid.

The choice of technique depends on the underlying cause and severity of the ptosis, and this will be discussed during your consultation.

Risks and possible complications

All surgery carries risks. Risks of ptosis correction may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Adverse reaction to anaesthesia
  • Difficulty fully closing the eyelid
  • Dry eyes or irritation
  • Asymmetry between the eyelids
  • Need for further surgery if correction is incomplete

The likelihood of complications differs from person to person. A detailed discussion of potential risks and expected outcomes will be provided at consultation to support informed decision-making.
