Neck Lift

  • Neck Lift

What is a neck lift?

A neck lift, also known as a cervicoplasty or platysmaplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the neck and area under the jawline by addressing sagging skin or muscle laxity. It may also involve removing or repositioning excess fat.

This procedure may be performed on its own or in combination with other surgeries such as a facelift, brow lift, or liposuction, depending on individual goals and the surgeon’s recommendations. The procedure typically takes two to three hours, but this may vary based on the extent of treatment and whether additional procedures are included.

It is important to note that while a neck lift can alter the position of tissues, it cannot stop the natural ageing process. Outcomes vary between individuals.

How is a neck lift performed?

The procedure is carried out under local or general anaesthesia, depending on what is most appropriate for the individual. Small incisions are made under the chin and around the ears. The underlying neck muscles (platysma) may be tightened to create a firmer contour. In some cases, liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the neck area. Excess skin may be removed, and the remaining skin is carefully repositioned. Sutures are used to close the incisions, and a small drain may be placed to help reduce swelling and collect fluid during the initial recovery period.

Dr Xu will discuss the procedure in detail during a consultation, including the techniques used and what to expect during recovery.

Recovery and aftercare

  • A compression bandage is usually applied after surgery to help manage swelling and support healing.
  • Many people are able to return to light daily activities 10–14 days after surgery, although this can vary depending on individual healing.
  • Strenuous activities, including sports, should be avoided for at least three weeks or as advised by Dr Xu.
  • Bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort are common in the initial recovery period.

Your practitioner will provide detailed post-operative care instructions tailored to your needs.

Possible risks and complications

All surgical procedures carry risks. Potential complications of a neck lift may include, but are not limited to:

  • Infection
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Prolonged tightness, tingling, or discomfort
  • Temporary or permanent numbness of the skin
  • Changes in sensation, such as burning or pulling
  • Scarring
  • Poor wound healing

Dr Xu will explain these risks in detail before the procedure and discuss steps that can be taken to minimise them.

Important considerations

  • Results vary depending on factors such as age, genetics, skin type, and lifestyle.
  • The procedure does not stop the natural ageing process, and additional treatments may be desired in the future to maintain results.
  • No specific or guaranteed outcome can be promised.
  • A thorough consultation with a qualified and registered health practitioner is essential before making a decision.
