Non-surgical Reshaping of the Lower Face (Jaw slimming)

Slim jaw procedure is a cosmetic technique for shaping the jaw to create a slender facial profile, also known as face slimming procedure.

A square jaw or a prominent lower jaw is usually said to be a masculine feature. Though, the square jaw is considered to be a positive trait for men, it is considered unappealing for women.

Prominent jaw line can be either congenital or developmental. Chewing gum, clenching teeth and bruxism increases the size of the chewing muscles (masseter) and manifests the jaw to look squarer.

Procedure

There are different types of slim jaw procedures available; depending on the patient, it can be surgical or nonsurgical.

Nonsurgical Treatment

Nonsurgical treatment is usually by means of anti-wrinkle injection. The anti-wrinkle injection is injected into the masseter, which blocks the nerve signals to the muscle, partly relaxes the muscle and reduces its size. The treatment is quicker with very less discomfort, and patients can usually drive back home soon after the procedure. The effect of anti-wrinkle injection is temporary and repeat injections are required to maintain the new look. One of the potential complications of anti-wrinkle injection procedure is the temporary paralysis of the muscles that move the lips.

Surgical Procedure

The jaw shaving or jaw reduction procedure is done under general anaesthesia. The aim of the surgery is to reduce the size of the mandible. Initially, an incision is made inside the mouth to prevent any visible scars. Then, the areas of prominent bone are marked and cut with a surgical drill and saw, to create a smooth contour. In case if the masseter is too thick, a trimming procedure is often performed to reduce the size of the masseter. Lastly, wound is closed using absorbable sutures.

Post-surgical Care

Usually, at least two days of hospitalisation is recommended following surgery. Postoperative swelling is most expected, and the manifestation is different for each. Some may experience temporary numbness after the surgery. Your physician may advise you to take medication to relieve pain and prevent infection. Soft food is advised for at least 7 days post-surgery. Any hard work or physical exercise should be avoided at least for the first 4 weeks after surgery. Your physician will give you further instructions based on your condition.

Risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications that are associated with the slim jaw procedure. You should be informed of all the risks and complications in advance to make a well-informed decision about your surgery. A rare complication of the jaw reduction procedure includes injury to the inferior alveolar nerve, which could affect the sensation of the lower lip and teeth.

Benefits

The benefits of slim jaw procedure are personal and can be extremely helpful if you are unhappy with a protruding jaw or a masculine face. Patients undergoing slim jaw procedure may also be benefited psychologically with improved self-esteem and confidence with their new look.
